I just finished On Assimilation: A Ranger's Return From War. Every person, every Veteran, every civilian should set down the book they are currently reading and pick this one up. It's not very long and you will barely miss the time spent away from your current book. What IT WILL DO is change your life.If you are a Veteran, this book will help you in ways you could not imagine. It will be a starting point for your healing. Leo has laid it all out there. I thank him for that.
If you've ever thought or spoken the words, "I Support Our Troops/Veterans" then you need to read this book. Chances are you have done more of a disservice to them than supporting them. You need to know what it's really like to be a Veteran and know what Veteran's are going through. From the failed VA to the fake help being offered by our government, the book shows an insight into the problems our Veteran's are going through. Unfortunately, the reality is, those problems may initiate with you. The person who will shake a Veteran's hand and thank them for their service but won't even consider them for employment. Just one example of many.
Don't set down your current book... drop it, throw it! Grab this one and read it as fast as you can.

After reading a few pages of Leo Jenkin’s On Assimilation I realized that we have a lot in common. We were both in the US Army Special Operations, spent time in lovely Kunduz, AFG, share an undying love for Jameson Irish Whiskey and both still had (still having) a difficult time transitioning from the military to the civilian world. I voraciously read my copy in two days while I highlighted shared experiences and filled the margins with copious amounts of notes. In a very direct and blunt manner, Leo illuminated thoughts and emotions I have been dealing with since I separated from the military almost three years ago.
The struggle to transition is real and the consequences of a failed transition are grave. In a society where fewer and fewer citizens serve in the military, veterans increasingly feel disconnected from the society for which they fought and bled. Twenty-two veterans a day are taking their own lives and thousands of veterans will roam the streets tonight instead of returning to the confines of a warm house. If the military civilian divide is to be bridged, our society needs to gain a greater knowledge of the sacrifice veterans make while they are deployed and the struggles they face during the transition back to civilian life.
Leo’s story is the same as so many other veterans; however, he is one of the few to courageously and transparently tell it. Leo is a patriot who has volunteered numerous times in his life to put himself in harm’s way for the greater good. He first volunteered to be a fire fighter as a teenager, then he volunteered to fight in the Global War on Terror as a Ranger Medic, now he has volunteered to bare his soul and show the world his scars with On Assimilation. Civilians owe it to Leo, and all other veterans, to read this book so as a society we can begin to close the massive chasm between military and civilian societies. Veterans need to read this book to help verbalize what they are going through and/or help other vets who are struggling through their transition.
As someone who lives with the challenges of PTSd I enjoy reading and finding insight in books by others who face similar challenges and adversities. There are a couple books so profound that I actually took notes but none rose to level of Leo's. His book was so intense for me at times it actually experienced some relapse PTSd symptoms that I had hoped were far behind me. However; I found tremendous value in this because some of my symptoms I have I did not yet know that others also experienced them. Each memoir and personal account that I have read have exposed me to more and more of the symptoms PTSd sufferers have in common but Leo's book really exposed some of the one I was not aware of but was none the less under the surface waiting to be addressed. I cannot say more on a public forum but trust me when I say that first responders and military vets are not alone in our experiences, exposure to trauma and the overriding shame in the belief that somehow it was all our fault.
The book itself is well edited and an easy and flowing read. Leo does tend to repeat some themes but the pace is right and I finished the book in only a few days. When I read the book I felt like I was having a conversation with Leo is some respects. And in fact I was because I was so caught up with some of the memories and emotions that it were brought back by certain passages I had to stop and text Leo with my thoughts, memories and reactions.
I cannot recommend this book enough. We are not alone and this book really can help shine some light into the black pit of PTSd so that we can become ever more cognizant of our buried triggers and fears and deal with them once and for all.
