Haunted by his past, Christopher Sterry fights to protect the woman he loves from a killer he cannot hear ~
Found standing over the lifeless body of his twin, Christopher is accused of killing his brother in a beastly rage. For Christopher is deaf in a society that condemns the silent as barbaric half-wits, quite capable of murder. While his accusers maneuver to return him to the tortuous asylum of his youth, Christopher searches for a killer now set on Helen, his murdered brother’s betrothed, as he struggles against a love never meant to be his.
Left a spinster at the altar, her groom murdered, Helen has no time to mourn. Her best friend and confidant, Christopher, is in danger and so, it appears, is she. Helen ignores her own risks and crosses into the line of fire to defend the only man to hold her heart.
Lady Eleanor solves crimes. This one is personal. Condemned without evidence, her godson, Christopher, is threatened with the barbaric asylum that destroyed his youth. She must act quickly before unjust convictions steal him away and cruel deception shatters a love, hidden and denied for far too long.
Lady Eleanor Mysteries, Book 2 ~
Regency romantic mystery with a touch of Gothic.
The Gatehouse Lady Eleanor Mysteries Book 2 edition by Becca St John Romance eBooks
Mysteries are hard to construct. This one has some definite high spots; brilliant but deaf hero and Aunt Eleanor who is a marvelous amateur detective among the better aspects.I had the strong impression that the author had the basic storyline in mind and then she forced characters and events into that storyline. It felt choppy, swung a bit wild, and lacked consistency. I was particularly jarred by the over-the-top lifelong hatred exhibited by Edmund who then had an overnight inexplicable change of heart. It felt as if the author just needed that to happen so it did. Nothing in his earlier character development or plot forecast this. Because so many characters (and there were far too many characters) seemed "off," I had trouble engaging. I did not accept the circumstance of the beloved deaf son of a rich earl going to the Conservatory (asylum) and then basically abandoned and not checked on by a caring family who supposedly were disappointed that the 8 year old didn't write to them. Ridiculous but necessary to force the plot along. Also, the constant shifting references to the 7th earl, 8th earl, two live brothers who might become the next earl plus the changes in their names within the story is uncomfortable to deal with. The flow and believability were struggling in this book unlike the first in this series. I did not believe in the final wrap up either. I like real people and believable villians.
Disappointed because I was looking forward to following this series. I gave the first one 5 stars. This probably deserves 2.

The Gatehouse Lady Eleanor Mysteries Book 2 edition by Becca St John Romance eBooks Reviews
Love this book with all the twists and turns. It would lead one direction and then it would go another. Took me almost the entire book before I caught on.
Enjoyed this historical/romance/mystery. I'm a fan of Becca St. John. This has an interesting storyline and enough suspense to keep me reading most of my day away. There were editing problems, however. Some disjointed phrases, and quotes attributed to characters that didn't make sense. Some of the action parts were confusing, as well as the explanations of killer's motive. But a good story none the less.
"Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review"
I’ve requested this book not because it was a thriller but because of its wounded hero, and I was more interested in the romantic plot than in the suspense one.
I liked how the author treated the hero’s disability and how it was well interwoven throughout the story, demonstrating a wide research of various aspects (historical, social, clinical, etc.). Above all, I liked that she didn’t ‘forget’ the hero’s disability but really incorporated it in the plot, in a realistic and solid way.
The prejudices affecting deafness are also dramatized, with the vision of this condition as dumbness or “a question of mental competence” (quote from ARC), affecting the hero in so many ways.
As the hero is rich he has an interpreter, another dimension well tackled by the author. He reads lips too, something that always leaves me a bit incredulous (but, unlike other writers, the author introduces this skill very carefully).
I liked the heroine's and Lady Eleanor tireless support of the hero.
I think that the chronological narrative creates some monotonous moments in the story and sometimes there's too much things going on.
I like Becca, and have read all of her books. I continue to be frustrated by errors in grammar and sentence structure, and the occasional loss of continuity. But it was a good story, and another chapter appears to be in the works.
I got both book one and book two. I enjoyed the light romance and mystery combination. Lady Eleanor reminds me of a Regency Ms. Marple.
Very exciting Read .Becca St. John. Know s how to keep her characters evolving. The novel is a wonderful mystery with more secret s ,twists and turn s,and unexpected truth s. Enjoy!
The second book was as good as the first and fellow readers, it stands alone nicely. This writer has captured my praise for good writing. Great new characters in this book, while keeping wonderful Eleanor, our great sleuth of a bygone era. The ending was thrilling. Such a great chase scene. Thank you for writing clean, historical romance mysteries. I'm hooked!
